I am so happy, his blood cultures came out NEGATIVE this morning, so no more talk of pulling his broviac out and re-doing it (meaning more surgery!) The bacteria ended up being Coagulase Negative Staphylococcus (or Staph Epidermidis) and Bacillus Species Cereus.
The Bacillus Cereus came back negative after the first couple of days, it was the Staph Epi that's been giving us so many problems!!! It is one that is found on everybody's skin, and they said it is a very common one for kids with lines to get, and that it is VERY hard to get out once its in there. They were only going to give him one more night (Friday) to have the culture came back negative, and then there were going to pull it, but GI Doc convinced them all to wait a little bit longer (Thanks Dr. M!!!).
Things were getting a little worrisome yesterday, Gavin's platelets dropped from 171 (which is already low) to a 9! He was put on Fall Precautions and they put signs up on his door, bed, and on his ankle to remind everyone to be extra cautious with him. He could have had a serious bleed. The hospitalist explained it that the spleen was overdoing its job of filtering the infection from the blood, and it was "eating" all his platelets up, so it was all swollen.
It was bad news all around, because they couldn't do surgery with his platelets so low, but they couldn't give him more platelets until the infection went away, but the Infectious Disease doctor didn't think they'd be able to get rid of the infection without pulling the line....so I am just GLAD that we don't have to worry about all that anymore!!!
He had to get two different IVs put in last night though, because they didn't want his TPN and Lipids to go through the broviac (since bacteria feeds on sugars) and the first IV in his wrist came out a couple hours after it was put in, so he had to get ANOTHER one in the back of his other hand. It was so sad. :( I absolutely hate seeing that. He screams and cries so much...it is just awful. (and it doesn't help when one of the nurses argues with me over whether he needs lidocaine put on first to numb the area!!!! Well, this Mama means business when it comes to her little guy's comfort, and Mama WON!)
He should be going home tomorrow, or at the very latest Tuesday (but I will be pushing hard for in the morning!) :D
{ Hello! }
My name is Gavin. I am 11 months old. I was born with a genetic disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency that caused my liver to go into failure. I was misdiagnosed for 3 months and underwent emergency surgery before they found out what was wrong. I am on the Organ Donation List and am waiting for my "gift of life" so I can have a liver transplant. You can read about my story by clicking {here}. Thank you for visiting my online journal!
*It is our deepest sorrow to inform you that Gavin passed away while waiting to receive a liver transplant. He was only 14 days away from his 1st birthday. Please, if you haven't already, sign up to be a registered organ donor today and talk to your loved ones about your wishes: http://www.donatelife.net/. Thank you all so much for your love and support during this last year.
