{ Hello! }

My name is Gavin. I am 11 months old. I was born with a genetic disorder called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency that caused my liver to go into failure. I was misdiagnosed for 3 months and underwent emergency surgery before they found out what was wrong. I am on the Organ Donation List and am waiting for my "gift of life" so I can have a liver transplant. You can read about my story by clicking {here}. Thank you for visiting my online journal!

*It is our deepest sorrow to inform you that Gavin passed away while waiting to receive a liver transplant. He was only 14 days away from his 1st birthday. Please, if you haven't already, sign up to be a registered organ donor today and talk to your loved ones about your wishes: http://www.donatelife.net/. Thank you all so much for your love and support during this last year.

Gavin's out of surgery

Gavin had his surgery today to remove his old broviac and put in a new one. It took about 45 minutes, so not very long. He had to fast from 4:30am on though, so he was pretty cranky during the day.

The surgery was without complications. They gave Gavin 3 bags of plasma this time (last time he only needed one!). Although when they tried to remove his ventilator afterwards, he wouldn't breathe on his own, so they had to put it back in. They decided to send him to the PICU and keep him there overnight to be observed. They said it wasn't surprising, since the aenesthia is digested through the liver, so it would take longer for Gavin to get it out of his system and wake up all the way.

Well, 10 minutes after they brought him to the PICU, he woke up while the nurse's back was turned and he wasn't very happy that the ventilator was in, so he ripped it out himself!!! :) That's definitely my Gavin...if he wants something, he's going to let you know, NOW!!! He stayed awake for about 15 minutes, then fell back asleep until 8:30pm.

He also had a big pool of blood under his bandage from the old broviac site that they were keeping an eye on. Then the night nurse was checking it and accidently released the blood from it. Andre was there when it happened and it shook him up a bit! He said blood sprayed out everywhere! Thankfully, it wasn't bleeding anymore from the site, so they re-dressed it and its fine now.

They should release him from the hospital in the morning. There were, of course, the "stressful, drama, tears" moments at certain points of the day...but its all over now so why dwell on it?! I'm just glad its all over and tomorrow we are going to be HOME. We're both pretty tired...its been a LOOOOONG 3 weeks. Andre's mom flew out to help us out though, so tomorrow night we're looking forward to some peaceful sleeping in our own bed together! Also, our church brought over a big stack of homemade frozen dinners for our family...I think its the best thing thats happened all week!! :D I am getting so tired of hospital food!!!

I am so grateful for all the support we've received from our family & friends. It really helps get us through. The hospital staff comments on it all the time, they don't see support like that very often. Its funny how the proper goodbye from the nurses is "I hope we DONT see you soon!" Hehe. ;)

Yay, I'm so glad everything turned out well! I've been thinking about you guys. Reading about the blood spray made me a little nauseous...this is why I could never be a nurse. That and the needles. And a lot of other things.
